Review and Rating: ***+ $$ Fetish Playmates 2005, Barossa, Australia = GOOD VALUE

Original tasting and review : This is Fetish Playmates, Barossa Valley, Australia, 2005, finished at 14.5% alcohol and first sampled a full decade from vintage date, in May, 2015.  It is a blend of 89% shiraz, 8% mataro (aka, mourvedre) and 3% grehache.

In the glass: Thick black burgundy, opaque a quarter inch from the edge of the glass.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows  bright classic Barossa blackberry shiraz fruit plus some redder cherry and berry tones. From the aroma, seems like this will be classic, sturdy and still plenty young for its age.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated:  a muscular, fairly classic Barossa shiraz experience, bringing bright red berries, surrounding tannic depth and plenty of solid acids that help keep the sip lifted.  Finish is clean and bright.

Robert Parker of Wine Advocate awarded 90-92 points, writing, "Displaying outstanding potential, the 2005 SGM (a blend of Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvedre) reveals a deep ruby/purple hue along with oaky aromas intermixed with notions of blackberries, cherries, and licorice. This heady, lush, tasty Aussie red should drink well for 3-4 years."

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a big plus for power and longevity and brightness on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Good value based on our metrics.
