Rating: **+ 2001 Robert Mondavi Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa CA

Review: This one is up from the cellar and has a few years of age on it. It shows a nice deep blood red color, not even beginning to move towards the orange or brick side of the spectrum. On the nostrils, it is clean and precise with its slightly oaked, classic-cabernet-aroma of black currant. It still has attitude when it hits the palate, linking obvious acids around dark cocoa powder and modest fruit. Clean, serviceable, pleasant - it just doesn't make me wonder about what it would be like to try it again, nor make me anticipate a return engagement. So 2+ stars it is.

My comparison review is from Stephen Tanzer, who gave it a 91 and said: "Good medium ruby. Smoky aromas of cassis, game and currant leaf. Very suave and fine in the mouth, with less obvious sweetness than the 2002 but perhaps more precision of flavor. Notes of currant, coffee, smoke and game linger impressively on the firm finish. Classy cabernet for the price." ... Sounds like an overly enthusiastic rating in my opinion. It's a shame too, because I've got a 2000 Mondavi Napa and 2001 Mondavi Oakville waiting in the basement for future tastings.
