Rating: ****+ 1997 Qupe Syrah, Central Coast CA

Review: This nicely cellared 10-year-old Qupe shows a clean bright red - much lighter color than I anticipated and with no fade toward the brick or orange portion of the spectrum. The aroma is majestic, cream and carmel mixed with the fruit. On the palate, there's that definite butterscotch flavor again (second time I've encountered that this week in red wines!). The finish is smooth and insistent. Wholly enjoyable.

Note to self: Pick up a couple more young Qupe's to put away for awhile.

  1. The Qupe Syrah we tried was 2005, and excellent. From Sant Ynez valley.
