Rating: ***+ 2003 Lucas & Lewellen Syrah, Santa Barbara County, CA

Review: Lucas & Lewellen's value-priced syrah comes from a blend of Los Alamos and Solvang Valley View vineyards. It creates a dark red, almost mahogany appearance in the glass.

Aromas (like most of L&L's varietals) are also reminiscent of pinot noir, this time showing a deep pinot noir plus chocolate nose. The first thing you notice about the palate is the bright mid-section, which is somewhat surprising given the deeper aromas. Then a round, oaky middle comes in to finish off the wine. Pleasant, even though not wholly distinctive.

This wine was sampled as part of our brief expedition cruising Santa Ynez Valley.
