Rating: ***+ 2004 Lucas & Lewellen Petit Verdot, Santa Barbara County, CA

Review: I try very few single varietal petit verdots, as this is typically used as a blending grape, so this tasting was of great interest to me. Lucas & Lewellen had sufficient quantity of Santa Ynez River Valley petit verdot grapes left over after blending to create some single-varietal cases.

In the glass, the wine shows a mid- to deep-red aspect. The aroma is quite mild... you need to draw it out of the glass. On the palate, the wine is sweet, rich, with a red beet middle and moderate finish. Just enough stuffing to hold its own for a repeat engagement. And pleasant to boot.

This wine was sampled as part of our brief expedition cruising Santa Ynez Valley.
