Rating: *** 2005 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills, CA

Review: This is Sanford's single vineyard pinot noir from some of the oldest vines in the region. I have been looking forward to giving this wine a try. In the glass, it was a light red, almost pink in color. The nose was promising, suggesting cherries and other sweet red fruit. On the palate, bright red berries are the first note, possibly raspberries or red currant. This is followed by a touch of sweetness. Sadly, the finish was quick, with little to make you contemplate the next sip.

I'd try it again, so three stars, but it hasn't defined the heights of pinot noir for me in this region. I'd look to the Presidio or Longoria collections for more promising examples.

This wine was sampled as part of our brief expedition cruising Santa Ynez Valley.
