Visiting Foxen Vineyard Tasting Room, Santa Maria, Santa Ynez Valley, CA

This visit was part of our brief expedition cruising Santa Ynez Valley.

Foxen Vineyards was one of the locations made popular by the "Sideways" film. The tasting room and winery are next to each other on Foxen Canyon Road in Santa Maria, CA. The two tiny barns are remarkably modest architecture for an operation that pushes out some 10,000 cases of wine per year. A portable bottling machine is the only apparatus that is rolled into the site to help accomplish this feat.

Unfortunately, when I visited, neither syrahs nor pinot noirs, the real objects of my visit, were available. Truthfully, visiting Foxen without getting to try a single one of their pinot noirs is a bit like coming to the concert and only getting the warm-up act. Oh well, maybe that's motivation for another visit back - but calling first!

Listing from most to least favored, here are the wines I sampled at Sanford:
2002 Foxen Foothills Reserve, Santa Ynez Valley, CA
2004 Foxen Sangiovese Dominique, Williamson-Dore Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, CA
2003 Foxen Cabernet Sauvignon, Vogelzang Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, CA
2004 Foxen Sangiovese Volpino, Santa Ynez Valley, CA
2004 Foxen Cuvee Jeanne Marie, Williamson-Dore Vineyard, Santa Ynez, CA
