Rating: ***+ 2001 Starry Night Syrah, Terra Alta Vineyard, Lodi CA

Review:
This is a "practically free" Lodi-based syrah, with a few years of age hanging on its fruity bones.

In the glass, the Starry Night syrah shows a medium deep red, somewhat cloudy rather than transparent. The aroma is an intriguing blend of smoky, charcoal-broiled fruit and deep black raspberries. You can start to understand the "Night" portion of the "Starry Night" name.

On the palate, you notice an upfront smashed cherry flavor, mixed with dark plums and fire-blackened smoke. Sweet, robust finish of only modest length. I'd definitely be interested to continue to try this with various amounts of decant time and age. So that's three stars of five, with a plus because of its true distinctiveness.
