Rating: *** $$ 2001 Topel Pinot Noir, Serendipity Vineyard, Monterey, CA

Review: These pinot noir grapes come from Serendipity Vineyard, a mountaintop vineyard in Anderson Valley, Monterey, CA.

This wine does have a few years on the bottle. The color is already an orangey-brown-magenta, suggesting it's well along in its aging profile. On the nose is a hot, slightly-spoiled cough medicine aroma - interesting, but kinda frightening too. Is that a hint of cabbage in there too?!

Wow, the palate is much more welcoming - round, almost lush, mature fruit; clean, balanced middle; no oxidation; touches of oak; lingering finish. Yes, I'd return to this another day.
