Rating: ** 2003 Leaping Lizard Napa Valley Merlot, Napa Valley CA

Review: There are two Leaping Lizard labels that I am aware of - this is the California-based Leaping Lizard from Adler Fels Winery in Sonoma; there is also an Australia-based Leaping Lizard. This 2003 "practically free" vintage merlot is made from Napa Valley fruit.

Color is dark magenta - almost opaque. Not much thinning to the edge of the glass. Aroma is of modest, clean merlot fruit. Nothing surprising - nor for that matter, interesting. On the palate, the first thing you notice is an almost effervescent spicy prickle on the tongue. Not acids, just spicy. Past that, the fruit is intense, purple-plumy in character, and focused on the mid-palate.
Nice for picnic, where the finish won't matter much. Pleasant, but doesn't draw me back. That's two stars out of five.
