Original Review, August, 2007: This Napa cabernet is called the "Grand Reserve" bottling from Villa Mt. Eden. It's quite a modestly priced Napa cab despite it's "Grand Reserve" labeling. Since I can't seem to find a "regular" bottling in Villa Mt. Eden after 2002 for any varietal, I'm not at all sure what this label means. They all seem to be "Grand Reserve"s now. Grade inflation, I presume. Well, let's see what's in the bottle - that's what really matters.

In the glass, this is an even black cherry color, quite deep. Upon swirling, pumps out a luscious, creamy, black cherry, suggesting a quite bold, round wine. On the palate, the deep cream-cherry burst is the first thing you notice, backed up by a touch of acids and oaky vanillla tones. Could be laid down a few years.

I might try something else in an evening, but I'd come back to this in the future, with pleasure. That's three plus stars out of five.

In comparison, Decanter Magazine gave this five stars out of five, and said,"Beautifully aromatic..........intense black fruits and smoky oak, hint of clay. Ripe, rich and full, bold black fruits supported by fresh acidity, and massive but ultra-ripe tannins. Creamy vanilla, spice, complex. Huge wine in a very American style. Drink 2012-17."

Updated Review, two and a half years later, March, 2010:  Still a deep red maroon in the glass.  Aromas move now toward sweet strawberries and blackcurrants.  On the palate, you pick up some sweet old world strawberries along with the deep, sweet cherries.  The finish is sweet, even, spicy and crisp.  Ready now, and outstanding.  Four stars now, and a best value.  Worth tracking down newer vintages.

Following lengthy decant, about two days in cool partial bottle:   Deep violets too on the nose now.  Rich, deep cherries, still a hint of earth. Yummy.
