Rating: ***+ 2001 Markham Reserve Merlot, Napa, CA

Review:
This shows as a mid red with just a touch of orange from the half-decade of age. Aroma is a dark cherry with a big helping of "English Leather" after-shave. On the palate, there is a distinctive ripe plum up front, with a long finish of mellow tannins and light acids. Very distinctive and pleasing at first sipping (would have yielded 4 stars) but, sadly, after about 20 minutes, the wine lost its distinctive edge and aromas. Three plus stars out of five.
