Rating: *** 2003 Mirassou Merlot, CA

Review:
This "practically free" California merlot hails from the century and a half old Mirassou family winery.

In the glass this is dark ruby red with purple highlights. It gives off an intriguing aroma of very ripe plums coupled with a bit of oak and even some sweaty socks up front. It suggests a very deep experience for such an inexpensive nectar.

However, the palate is much brighter with fruit than expected, not unpleasant, but it hints more of blueberry and blackberry and licorice, with an alcoholic pang in the middle. Fairly quick finish, but what do you want for this price?!

Decent sipping wine, I'd have it again, but I wouldn't sacrifice an evening to it. So three stars out of five.
