Rating: ***+ 2004 Ruca Malen Yauquen, Cabernet/Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina

Review:
Ruca Malen is a focused winery at the foot of the Andes near Mendoza. Yauquen is a cabernet sauvignon / malbec blend that sells at a "practically free" price (ie, often under $10 U.S.).

This is a medium deep mahogany color in the glass - looks serious! The aroma is compelling too - deep, dark, luscious - black, oaked cherries and clay. Sweet and big and full of deep fruit when it hits the palate; simple, though, with a hit of alcohol that makes the tongue shiver. You can feel every bit of the 14.8%. Not as chewy as I was hoping. Finishes fast. But a nice milk chocolate comes in as part of the aftermath. A wine I would definitely try again. Three plus stars out of five. And at the price, that's a steal!

Tried again April 2008: Similar notes, same rating. Just a tad more chocolate on the finish. Not showing its age, so I think this one has a few more years left on it!
