Rating: ***+ 2005 d'Arenberg "Last Ditch" Viognier, McLaren Vale, Australia

Following from my happy experience with d'Arenberg's Hermit Crab white wine, I was very interested to try this one.

In the glass, it is clear with a glint of cream and gold and green. Aromas hurtle from the glass: popcorn butter, light green grass, a touch of honeyed butterscotch and even clean shoe leather. Heck, pick almost any interesting smell you like, and it's probably in there somewhere.

This comes smooth and clean honey to the mid-palate with just a touch of acid. Very pleasant though simple and with only a modest finish. Just shy of four stars. So three plus out of five.
