Rating: ***+ 2003 Langwerth Von Simmern Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spatlese

Review: German Spatlese are mid-level sweet rieslings. This Langwerth von Simmern is a medium-priced variety (in the $20-30 US range) with a strong base of ratings.

In the glass, this is a medium golden color, with the slightest tinge of green. Aromas are sweet with a slight old world wine overtone. Perhaps a touch of citrus and mineral.

On the palate, a bright, sweet, lightly acidic sensation is the first note, rounding through the middle with honey elements. Moderate finish, sliding along with the light mineral tone. Three plus stars out of five. If I had a way to give it an extra plus for one of the awesome-est labels ever, I would.

Wine Spectator's 93 points for the vintage seems a bit on the high side to me.
