Face-off: Chile vs Argentina Cabernet Sauvignon

Here's a quick little face-off between two value-priced 2005 cabernet sauvignons from well-known South American areas... the Finca Flichman Vino Reserva from Mendoza, Argentina, and the Root: 1 from Colchaugua Valley, Chile.

Both the Finca Flichman and the Root:1 were subjects of individual reviews, but this is a side-by-side look.

Color of both is comparable... a deep red, just becoming transparent at the edge.

The Root: 1 aroma is absolutely mesmerizing. The aroma of the Finca is subtler, classic and pleasant.

On the palate, the two wines measure up as more comparable. The Root: 1 showing a raw plum edge with brightness and acidity; the Finca showing a more classic cabernet profile, almost seeming a bit aged in comparison with the youthful exuberance of the Root: 1.

So, enthusiastic youth in Chile; the classic moderation of middle-age in Argentina. Two outstanding value wines from this prolific region.
