Review and Rating: **** Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004, Napa Valley, CA

This Merryvale cabernet sauvignon is blended with grapes from a number of well-known Napa vineyards, including the likes of Beckstoffer and ToKalon. It is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

In the glass, it is a deep magenta, close to opaque. Aromas are inviting and beguiling... soft, slightly oaky with a good core of berry. On the palate, think creamed chocolate blueberry. Quite open, lush and fragrant, yet with a bit of old world structure. Good, lasting finish. I'd stay with this for an evening. Thus, four stars out of five.

I couldn't find many comparative reviews. Steve Heimoff of Wine Enthusiast had a similar perspective, giving 91 points and saying, "It's dry, rich and complex, with a classic Napa balance of firm, sweet tannins, acidity and cassis and cherry fruit. Beautiful now, and should hold well for six years."
