Review and Rating: **** $$ Hijos de Juan Gil, 2005, Portugal

LIVE Review: The Hijos de Juan Gil is made of 100% monastrell, or mouvedre. This is virtually black in the glass. Aromas are of strong raisin. Flavors are rich, deep, inky, compelling. Four stars out of five.

Stephen Tanzer of the International Wine Cellar liked it too, giving 89 points and saying, "Inky violet. Intense floral, spice and red berry aromas offer striking pungency and clarity. Sweet red fruit on the palate, dusted by sexy oak spices and gaining a suave gingerbread quality on the close. With its sweet finish and impressive silky persistence, this reminds me of a southern Rhone wine."
