Original Review, April, 2008: The Planeta La Segreta Rosso, 2005, is made from a blend of nero d'avola, syrah and merlot grapes. It shows as transparent blood red in the glass - almost shimmering.

Red cherry with candy apple covering on the modestly-endowed nose. On the palate, a lush, deeply fruited and perfumed cherry tone, with nicely-balanced acids and tannins completing the full-on frontal pleasure. Not a great deal of follow-on finish, and little in the way of layered complexity. But solid, resilient fruit. Three stars out of five.

Wine Enthusiast awarded 88 points, writing, "Blackberry, prune, pencil shavings, charcoal and a rubber-like note sum up the aromas of this Nero d’Avola, Merlot and Syrah blend. The wine is penetrating and intense on all levels with ripe fruit flavors and dusty tannins in the mouth."

After a full day's decanting: aromas now moved towards inky cherry. On the palate, balanced dry, cherry cough medicine in overall tone. Quite intriguing. Balanced finish.

Updated Review, two and a half years later, September, 2010, now five years from vintage date: Consistent colors.  The nose still retains candy-apple red components, but now mixed with a lusher layer of knit fabric.  The palate appears fully resolved now, no need for further aging.  Solid mid-weight red with clean balance of fruity acids and light tannins, but seemed to have more distinction while young.  I'd recommend it as a youngster.
