Review and Rating: ****+ $$$$$ Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay, Margaret River, 2004, Australia

Review: The Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay, Margaret River, 2004, displays a light honey color in the glass. Aromas are profound and complex: butter, pears, lightly oaked honey.

On the palate, the Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay is luscious, showing many layers at once. It is dry but rich, clearly oaked, but balanced with lovely brioche. It sports a long-lasting finish.

Four stars with a plus for the future. May hit five in time.

Wine Advocate awarded 93 points and reported, "The 2004 Chardonnay "Art Series" was aged for 18 months in 100% new oak with no malolactic fermentation. It offers a classic Puligny aromatic profile of mineral, butterscotch, white peach, spiced apple, and poached pear. This leads to a streamlined Chardonnay with its oak totally integrated, ripe, elegant flavors, outstanding depth and concentration, and a long, pure finish. It will evolve for 2-3 years and drink well for up to a decade."
