Review: This Penfold's Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, 2001, from South Australia has a few years on it. Although named for a single vineyard, Kalimna, the Bin 28 label is actually a shiraz blended from a number of south Australian vineyards.  First sampled seven years from vintage date, in 2008.

In the glass, it appears as a dark magenta, still with purple highlights at the rim. The youthful purple highlights are a first suggestion to me that the wine can continue to sit in bottle for a few years. Interesting.

Aromas are powerful and compelling... deep, black cherry fruit with a substantial oak overlay - brought on by the 12 months in aggressive American oak.

On the palate, the first notes are of a lush, full-featured, chocolaty shiraz, flushing fruit and oaky robes around your mouth. Balanced but big, the fruit is full, the tannins generous, the finish lasting, the acids light but present, the alcohol not overpowering. Very nice showing, with the possibility of additional layers growing with more time in bottle. I'll stay with this for the evening - four stars out of five. Excellent value.
