*** $$ Rutherford Ranch Merlot, 2001, Napa, CA - Review and Rating

Find Rutherford Ranch Merlot at WineZap.

Original Review, July, 2008: This is a Napa merlot from Rutherford Ranch with a few years of age. In the glass, it is medium red - lighter than I might have expected for the varietal and region.

The nose comes across as a bit alcoholic, with black cherry fruit and little or not oak.

On the palate, you notice a sweet middle, pretty strong alcohol, very light tannins and a bit of a "grape-y" style. It just nudges to a 3 out of 5 on my scale. I might try again someday.
Updated review, a year and a half later, January, 2010:

Color is still medium red, like a reasonably deep pinot noir. Aroma has gone muddy - think broccoli-encrusted baked cherry.  The medium light sweet red berry is still there on the palate, but still in an odd, funky frame.  Drink this one younger than I have - it does not want to be this old!
