***+ $$ Barnard Griffin Merlot, 2005, Columbia Valley, WA

Review: The Barnard Griffin Merlot, 2005, from Columbia Valley WA, is dark red, almost opaque in the glass. Aroma is sweet, creamy with a bold blast of inky black cherry.

First note as you sip is a big gob of mineral and sweet black cherry on the mid-palate. Acids touch mildly after that, with very light tannic touch. Only modest finish Three stars out of five, with a plus for the profound aroma.

Wine Spectator awarded a modest 87 points, saying, "Crisp in texture, with a racy edge to the blackberry and black pepper flavors, finishing with a tight grip. Best after 2009."
