**** $$$ Toni Jost Bacharacher Hahn Spatlese Riesling, 2004 , Germany

Review: The Toni Jost Bacharacher Hahn Spatlese Riesling, 2004, is part of a birthday celebration for Karen, the budding riesling aficionado of the clan.

In the glass, the Toni Jost is transparent light yellow, with glints of green.

I have to use the word "glint" for the aromas too, which have a steely grassiness, touched with just a hint of sugar. On the palate, the medium middle sweetness is the first impression, characteristic of the Spatlese style. There is a nice pinch of acids coming to the cheek through the sweetness, which carries the mild fruit into a lingering, yet crisp finish.

Not overpowering, but because of its joyful nature, I'd stick with it, garnering four stars.

Robert Parker awarded 91 points, saying, "The aristocracy of German Riesling is center stage with this delightful 2004 from Jost. The fun begins with apple blossom, grapefruit, jasmine and guava aromas. The creamy entry and then firm slap of acidity makes you wonder why you drink anything else. Low alcohol (9%), intense."
