*** $$ Magito Panorama Zinfandel, 2005, CA - Review and Rating

Review: The Magito Panorama Zinfandel, 2005, is from a combination of vineyards throughout California. Although the 75% zinfandel grape in the mix allow it to be designated a "zinfandel" varietal under labeling laws, it also includes a mix of 8% cabernet sauvigtnon, 5% syrah, 6% sangiovese, 4% merlot and 2% petite sirah.

In the glass, Magito is medium, dusty brick red. It's aromas spill into the room even before the swirling begins. When the nose is pressed to the glass, bold fruit aromas emerge. They are pulsed with touches of motor oil and basement dust, with a touch of alcohol lift, no doubt aided by the 14.9% alcohol in the mix.

On the palate, the Magito is somewhat more balanced and subdued than I anticipated, providing a spicy, mid-palate expression of blackberry and dark oak, firmed by mouth coating sleek tannins. Again, the alcohol is just a touch hot for the flavor combination. Three stars out of five. Might be worth checking out again in a couple of years.

Wine Spectator awarded 87 points, reporting, "Dark berry, wild berry and earthy cedar flavors are fresh, vibrant and lively, with nice peppery scents and a long, complex finish. Drink now through 2011. 1,550 cases made."
