Original Review, May, 2009: Argentina has been bringing forward a number of winners in red wines in recent years, especially among value-priced offerings. This one, the Barrandica Vineyards Estate Wine Selection, 2005, from Mendoza, Argentina,is made by Antucura. It is a meritage blend of 50% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon and 10% malbec, tipping in at 14% alcohol.

Barrandica is a deep medium red in the glass. Aromas are clean and bright, with wisps of ripe raspberry.

On the palate, you get a toned, quite elegant fruity experience. The fruit does open quite boldly in the center of your mouth, and ripe red berries cascade along the edges. Acids are mild, and the tannins hidden but helpful in gliding the finish along quite nicely.

A bright, cheery, balanced experience. Three stars with a plus for its classy elegance, making this a good value indeed.

Updated review, over two years later, July, 2011:  Medium deep red, moving to opaque in the center, some light bricking at the edge.  Subtle, clean red berry aromas.  Full fruit on the palate, more balanced than before. Ripe red currants and cherries, wrapped in solid tannins and acids with a hint of oak. Impressive staying power, and gains a half-notch to four full stars, making this an outright best value, now six years after its vintage date.  Following long decant, full day in partially filled bottle at cool room temperature:  Red berries are sweet on the nose.  Yummy and balanced on the palate, with soft tannins holding a lengthy finish.  Confirms the upgrade to four stars and encourages a solid decant.

  1. I love how the foil cap works with the label design of this wine! More wineries should take note - I think caps are often soooo boring and underutilized.

Also, I have a great idea for your blog! Please email me, stacy (at) americanwinery (dot) com
