*** $ Verdi Spumante, Italy - Wine Review and Rating

By way of background: Don't be confused... this is Verdi Spumante, NOT Verdi ASTI Spumante. "Asti" Spumante would imply a couple of things - first, that it was made from grapes, and second, that those grapes came from the Asti D.O.C.G. region of Italy. Neither should be implied by the name Verdi Spumante. "Spumante" just means sparkling.

As the label points out, Verdi Spumante is a "malt beverage with natural flavors". Whooaa... hold on there... does that mean it's even a "wine"? Well, probably not, unless your definition of "wine" extends to "beer" and "ZIMA"! Oh, well, so let's try and not hold these technicalities against it. We want it for a party. What's it taste like?

In the glass: Clear. Like, clearer than any clear wine you've seen. Like, water clear. Like, vodka clear.

On the nose: Poured without a decant and swirled only lightly, you find crisp apple in the nose, along with hints of cherry. Perhaps those are the "natural flavors"?

On the palate: Yes, the apple cider element is there along with a distinct cherry cola element. You find a first bubbly assault on the upper palate, bringing sweet juice.

And the finish: The finish is fairly fast and clean, but it does come in with a sugary cloying element, sadly not as clean as first suggested.

In summary: Not a bad experience in a social setting, though I wouldn't come back to it in a more contemplative mood. So, because I would seek it out again, it gains three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. That makes it an excellent value at its "practically free" price.

  1. Think light apple cider with a light kick. Overtones of berries and adequate bubbles. Great with a ice cube or two. Not sweet but not "wineish" either. Good with fish or vegan foods. Too light for serious meats like beef or chicken.
Great price and handsome bottle. More girly drink.
Guys who like quiches will like it.
