By way of background: Walnut Crest Merlot is part of the value-priced Walnut Crest line of wines from the producer Vinedos Emiliana of Chile. The grapes are from the Emiliana Vineyards in the Valle Rapel region.

Original Review, November, 2009, in the glass: Walnut Crest Merlot is medium deep dusty red throughout.

On the nose: A big, bold, billowy aroma, sporting sweet bursting purple helium balloons, bursting red currants and ripe raspberries, and wafts of alcohol. Nothing if not potent!

On the palate: A surprisingly delicate, smooth front fruit is the first note, bringing ripe red cherries to the front of your tongue. That is followed by a smooth, easy mid-palate, adding light acid notes to bring the fresh red currants into the edges of your cheeks. Tannins are not noticeable, but a smoky undertone does come through.

And the finish: The lightly sweet finish is carried by gentle acids to a moderate, clean, lively finish.

In summary: Profound aromas, satisfying overall experience. Three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, as I would definitely seek a return encounter with Walnut Crest Merlot. A great value.

Updated Review, one year later, November, 2010:  Color is consistent.  Aromas have lost the helium element, but retain bold plums and raspberries.  Sandy cherries with elements of prune come through initially on the palate.  The sleek mid-palate remains, along with the lightly oaked, yet clean finish.  Still three stars - I'm impressed how well it is showing its maturity to adulthood.  Outstanding value.
