Updated Review: **+ $ Miolo Family Vineyards Pinot Noir, Vale dos Vinhedos, Brazil, 2008 - Wine Review and Rating

By way of background: Miolo Reserva Pinot Noir is a decidedly bargain-priced pinot noir, coming from mountains in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Serra Gaucha), Brazil.  The vineyard area Vale dos Vinhedos is the first region of Brazil certified for winemaking.  For the 2008 vintage, Miolo Pinot Noir was aged in oak barrels and finished at 13% alcohol, almost a bit modest by new world standards.

Original review, January, 2010:

In the glass: Miolo Pinot Noir shows as moderately deep burgundy, even showing purple highlights at the edges, somewhat unusual for pinot noir.

On the nose: Poured cool without a decant and swirled vigorously, the wine offers a bold - but decidedly funky - aroma.  Helium balloons predominate.  Likely that will blow off with some air, but it does overwhelm the initial aromatics.  Sniffing past that (difficult!), you can get ripe plums.

On the palate: The first element on the palate is an aromatic, roof-of-mouth clean ripe plum, ringed by deep red berries around the edges of your mouth.  Moderate acids lodge the red fruits into the crevices of your cheeks.

And the finish: Rapid, but clean, acid-cleaned finish with just a hint of fruit residue.  Leaves you ready for the next sip.

In summary: Overall, two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, mostly because I cannot see chasing additional bottles of Miolo.  For its price, though, an approachable, balanced rendering of the pinot noir experience.

Updated review, over two years later, March, 2012:  Deep burgundy, now the highlights at the edge are ruby red.  Bright and deep plums as the primary aromatic.  Soft, very dry, raisined plums on the palate.  A touch of sandiness surrounds the taut interior.  Clean finish.  The fruit is still hiding in reserve.Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Clean and consistent aromatics.  The palate shows a spit of fruit now, with a pleasing sleekness.  Gains a plus on the two stars for this improved showing.
