Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: Cantine Colosi Nero d'Avola of Sicilia, Italy, is finished at 14% alcohol for the 2007 vintage.

In the glass: Colosi Nero d'Avola shows as medium red in the glass, but moving to opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured cool with no decant and swirled vigorously, this nero d'avola sports a quite shy aroma, only hinting of dark fruit.

On the palate: The first element on the palate is a somewhat sweet mid-palate of dark prunes.  It is surrounded by a robe of easy tannins and light acids.

And the wrap-up: The finish is cleanly sweet, not cloying, wrapping up with a hint of fragrant tobacco.

In summary: Overall, deep but friendly experience. Rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Antonio Galloni of the Wine Advocate awarded 90 points and said, "The 2007 Nero d'Avola is made from the property's best fruit and is aged exclusively in stainless steel, which is somewhat of a departure from the norm. No matter, the approach clearly works. This is a gorgeous, full-bodied Nero d'Avola bursting with sweet dark cherries, menthol, sage and flowers. It offers notable clarity and elegance, something I can't say too often about the wines of Sicily. Simply put, this is an incredible value. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011."

Following a two-day decant under vacuum in a partially-filled bottle:  The nose now wants to project an essence of deep, stewed prunes.  On the palate, the prunes are still there, but want to muddle with some red fruit flavors too.  Colosi likes this time in the air.  Makes me think time in bottle would be well-received as well.

Updated review,  a year and a half later, October, 2011:  Still medium red in the glass, now with a hint of brick at the edge.  The nose shows a clear dark plum.  The palate remains of dark prunes, now with some black cherries mixed in. Full, solid and deep.
