Review: ***+ $ Porca de Murca Red (Tinto), Douro, Portugal, 2007 - Wine Tasting & Review

By way of background: Porca de Murca from Douro, Portugal, is made from a mix of traditional regional grapes. The 2007 vintage of this "practically free" red wine is finished at 13% alcohol.

In the glass: Porca de Murca shows as medium deep red in the glass.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Douro red blend sports a light red berry nose with elements of dust and beach sand.  

On the palate: The first element on the palate is a mouth-filling sweet red cherry and currant wash.  That picks up a sugary black pepper element (intriguing), which extends across your tongue and into your cheeks.   

And the wrap-up: The finish starts with that sweet black pepperiness, which lingers quite awhile.  The Douro picks up a pleasant acid tickle (almost like champagne bubbles) before it settles to a clean close.

In summary: Overall, this is a unique, multi-sensory, lightly sweet and intriguing red berry experience. Rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its intriguing ambidextrousness.  Awesome, eye-popping value.

Following a two-day decant under vacuum in a partially-filled bottle:  The red aromas are still there, having shed beach sand for bright raspberries.  Palate elements are consistent, although today the sugar is more subdued.  No benefit seen to the additional air time.


Updated review, a year and a half later, October, 2011: Consistent color, now a hint of brick at the edge. Funky medium red now on the nose. Consistent also on the palate, showing well integrated deep red berry fruit.
