Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: Reilly's Watervale Riesling from Clare Valley, Australia, was produced only from free-run juice from riesling grapes in the 85-year-old vineyards. The 2007 vintage is finished at 13% alcohol. Built on a base of acids for age, it is said to be approachable from the year 2010.  We've just entered that window, sampling in February, 2010, so let's see...

In the glass: Reilly's Watervale Riesling shows as water-clear in the glass, with a mere hint of vanilla.

On the nose: Poured cool without decant and swirled vigorously, this riesling shows a deep, earthy, funky balloon-like nose of fresh rainfall on hay.

On the palate: The first element on the palate is a sleek, mid-palate tartness - a bit lemon-like - which moves across the palate evenly to your cheeks.

And the wrap-up: The finish is clean, simple and quite fast, carried along by the light acids.

In summary: Overall, a light, surprisingly simple experience, held together by the light acids.  May be helped considerably by age, but for now rates a mere two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Jay Miller and Josh Raynolds were much bigger fans than I, with these reports:

"The 2007 Watervale Riesling is light gold with green overtones. It has a refined perfume featuring mineral, star anise, spring flowers, honey, pineapple and other tropical fruits. Dry on the palate and backed by excellent acidity, the wine has superb depth of fruit and a long finish. Enjoyable now, it will certainly age for a decade in the manner of a top German Kabinett." - 91 points, Jay Miller, Wine Advocate

"Pale yellow. Impressively complex bouquet of lime, pear, tarragon and white pepper. Spicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors offer excellent precision and thrust, finishing with slow-mounting minerality. An elegant, focused style that will repay cellaring." -90 points- Josh Raynolds- International Wine Cellar

Updated review, now seven years from vintage date, June, 2014:  More yellow than clear in the glass.  Fresh laundry plus grasses on the nose.  Clean, simple, fresh, long-lived palate, extremely light on its feet.  Now an easy three stars.
