By way of background: Terruno Hombre Valdehermoso Roble of Ribera Del Duero, Spain, is finished at 14.5% alcohol for this 2005 vintage.

Original Tasting and Review, February, 2010:

In the glass: Valdehermoso Roble shows as deep muddy magenta in the glass, opaque to within 3/4 inch of the edge.

On the nose: Poured with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this tempranillo sports a beefy, fleshy, bold nose, mixing blood and ripe black currant.

On the palate: The first element on the palate is a full, dusty, muddled, beef-blood fruit in the middle of your tongue.  This flows across your mouth in a mineral-sleek fashion, lifting lightly with bright highlights even as it sinks with muddy-sweet tannins into your cheeks.

And the wrap-up: The finish is layered with cocoa and sweet highlights as it fades slowly with the supporting alcohol.

In summary: Overall, a solid, layered, rich and luxurious experience. Rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  A great value.  Wine Advocate awarded 90+ points, fairly consistent with our four-star rating.

Following a five-day decant under vacuum in a partially-opened bottle:  Fruit on the nose is amplified over the muddy/fleshy aspects. On the mouth, though, the layers, complexity and depth remain intact.  The air time solidly supported the wine.

Updated review, over two years later,  March, 2012: Consistent color, perhaps veering towards mahogany from magenta.  The same fleshy nose.  Wow.  This has held remarkably, amazingly consistent on the palate, now seven years from vintage date.  Still has the layers, the brightness, the sleekness, the deep complexity.  What a winner at a fabulous price. Still a best value.  Following long decant, two days kept cool in partially filled bottle: Nose of very ripe, almost over-ripe, black raspberry.  Solid palate, but veering towards over-wrought with the extra air.  Ready to drink up!
