By way of background: Limb Vineyards Patterson Hill Shiraz is from Barossa Valley, Australia, near Greenock. The 2004 vintage is finished at 13.5% alcohol, modest by Barossa Valley standards.

Original Tasting and Review: March, 2010:

In the glass: Limb Shiraz shows as muddy deep burgundy in the glass, opaque to within a half inch of the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this purebred Barossa Valley Shiraz shows deep plum, cotton candy aromas, with that touch of just-opened helium thrown in.

On the palate: The first element on the palate is a fairly bright red rich strawberry robe of fruit.  This caresses your tongue, but brings silty tannins along to follow.  The impression is a thick but bright red berry fruit, lightly sweet.

And the wrap-up: The finish is clean red, and characterized by the cocoa-silt undertone.

In summary: Overall, a rich, ripe red experience, rooted in these sweet tannins. Rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Wine Spectator awarded 91 points to Limb Patterson Hill Shiraz, saying, "Silky, supple and generous. A stylish Shiraz that layers its savory plum, smoke and spice flavors into a seductive package, letting it all linger expressively. Drink soon, or give this time. Best from 2010 through 2014. 400 cases imported."

Updated review, two years later,  March, 2012:  Deep mahogany color, with a hint of brick now at the edge.  Soft tobacco and lifted deep candy apple fruit on the nose.  The palate is sweet, bright, deep and balanced, with soft, silky blackberries, very ripe red currant and a sweet cappuccino essence that follows.  It flows along into a sleek and lengthy finish.  Delicious now, eight years from vintage date, and almost touches four stars on the Spirit of Wine scale.  Remains a good value.  Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Nose moves towards a purple, inky motor oil.  The light motor oil remains in the layered, ripe red palate.
