Original Tasting and Review:
By way of background: Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin is made from head-trained zinfandel grapes hailing from Lodi, CA. The 2008 vintage is finished with aging in French and American oak and tips in at 14.5% alcohol. In the glass: Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin shows as in deep magenta in the glass, almost opaque in the center.
On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Lodi zin shows a smoky, oaky deep fruit nose, big, bad and bold.
On the palate: The first elements on the palate are sweet blackberry wrapped in oak. Components of a charcoal broil come through in the background. And the wrap-up: The finish is aromatic and fades slowly away with smoky notes.
In summary: Overall, a big, bold, old zin experience. Totally new world. Rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, delivering much, much more than its very modest price demands. Best value.
