Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: This is Cameron Hughes Lot 178 Syrah from the Los Carneros area, around Napa and Sonoma counties, California. Negociant Cameron Hughes has put this 2007 offering together from cool-climate vines in the area.  This wine started life as Havens Hudson Vineyard Syrah.

In the glass: Medium deep burgundy.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Carneros syrah shows a deep, funky, somewhat oaky, black cherry and stewed black currant fruit.  Intriguing.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are a balanced, taut, mineral, dark, dry anise-tinged experience, with significant fruit being held in reserve.  Wants more time in the decanter or bottle.

In summary: Overall, three stars at present on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its edginess and latent power.  You can feel the muscles bulging beneath the shirt.   Let's stay tuned.

Following long decant,  full day kept cool in a partially-opened bottle:  The aromas have mellowed, but show the same charcoal fruitiness. On the palate, the elements are beginning to knit together wonderfully... black fruit is creeping up and swirling around the charcoal dust, subduing it and bringing it to lodge pleasantly in your cheeks.  Very nice, and very good value.
