Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: This is Joel Gott Zinfandel, California, 2008, finished at 14.4% alcohol.

In the glass: Brilliant ruby purple in the glass, no opacity or darkness showing through.

On the nose: Poured cool with a long, two-hour decant, this California zinfandel shows a piercing nose of fresh clean laundry and just ripened plums, with a sort-of-cherry-strawberry-hard-candy mixed in.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are a distinct, rich, oak-tinged sweetness in the mid-palate.  This lifts into your nostrils with bold and bright and winsome aromatics.  A clean, refreshing finish, cleaner than the sweet palate might have suggested, and lingering longer than the brightness would have proposed.

In summary: Overall, a boldly bright and distinctive offering. Rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its unique, exuberant style.  Good value.
