Original Tasting and Review.

By way of background: This is Milton Park Shiraz, South Australia, finished at 13.5% alcohol for the 2007 vintage.  It is a value-priced shiraz with decent reviews, that I've been looking forward to trying.

In the glass: This Aussie shiraz is medium ruby red, unusually light for this region.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, Milton Park shows dark and mildy oaky with a distinct pale but deep funk.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are a surprising sweetness to the distinctly-oaked mid-mouth, with dilute blackberry juice surrounding this core.  A tangy acid lift fixes the sweet-and-sour flavors in your cheeks for a surprisingly lingering finish.

In summary: Overall, not your grandfather's Australian shiraz.  A much, lighter finish, sweet and oaked tone than I would have expected. Rates a surprisingly strong three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, not something I would have predicted from the color and aroma. Excellent value.  For comparison, Wine Advocate awarded this 88 points.
