By way of background: This is Hartford Zinfandel Jolene's Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Sonoma, CA, 2005.

Initial review, five years from vintage date, December, 2010:

In the glass: Deep rusty magenta/red.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, This Russian River Valley zinfandel shows husky, musky red fruit.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are red licorice on the palate, with a touch of dark candy apples following on.  Interesting robe of bright tannins wrapping the fruit.  The brightness sings less of acids than of the red fruits.  While not terribly long or layered, the finish is clean, pleasant and polished.

In summary: Overall, a solid, concentrated red-fruit-based offering, and its balance made it work well with food, too.  I'd definitely try it again.

Updated review, four years later, now a full decade from vintage date, January, 2015: Deep brick color.  Aromas of well-aged mahogany-encrusted fruit.  The fruit shows soft balanced red fruit.  More like soft cherry jam than bright red currants.  A certain smokiness and soft cinnamon spice adds to an overall mature feel.  Very nice.
