Initial review, by way of background: This is Farella-Park Vineyards "West Face" Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, CA, 2006, finished at 14.5% alcohol. Farella-Park is a relatively small winery near the Vaca Mountains in Napa, CA.

In the glass: Deep muddy magenta, opaque from about an inch in from the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Napa cab shows powerful floral aromatics - think violent violets! - with hints of caramel, cocoa, oak and deep fruit.  Quite varied on the nose, that's for sure.

On the palate: The palate brings delicate mid palate fruit, floral once again, bringing subtle, impressive waves of sandy cocoa, milk chocolate, deep red fruit, all steeped in an aromatic mix.  The finish lasts and lasts, settling slowly out of sight with the silty tannin robe slowly letting the elements from the sip slowly fade.  Truly awesome, lithe finish on an otherwise bright red experience.

In an unusual finding, I discovered that the smaller the sip with Farella-Park West Face, the better the balance shown through between the flavors, tannins and fruit.  You can think of it as more tasty sips for your money.   Gulps blunted the whole experience, moving it to pure acidic berry.  Keep in mind, this brightness (ie, acidity) does seem to cry out for food.

In summary: Overall, unique red-berry style, providing a layered experience that just touches four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Following long decant, one full day kept cool in a partially filled bottle:     The nose is still an aromatic potpourri, though perhaps a bit muted from yesterday. Tangy-bright on the mid palate with red berries and gentle tannins closing in around them.  Seems to have lost some of the layers with the lengthy decant. Smaller sips still best, bringing out the milk chocolate and tannins.
