Initial review, by way of background: This is Pearce Cellars Chardonnay, California, 2009, finished at 13.% alcohol.   It is an offering from the Wine Insiders service, and is a California Wine Club Selection.

Original review date, January, 2011:

In the glass: Transparent with significant vanilla elements and hint of lemon.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this California chardonnay shows distinct lemon and citrus notes.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are, oddly enough, not citrus at all, but sleek and butterscotchy.  Deep fruit, with undertones of light oak and minerals.  If you liked the other recent Wine Insider chardonnay offering, the Bellchambers Chardonnay 2009, you'll like this one too.  Wouldn't surprise me if they share some fruit.  Finish veers towards light sugar, and finishes clean and crisp.

In summary: Overall, rates a solid three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for pleasant balance.  Great value.

Following long decant, two days kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Now a sleek mineral butterscotch has come into the nose, squeezing out much of the lemon and citrus.  Clean, light, lithe and lightly sweet, creates an outstanding blend of sleek, warm, sweet and crisp.  Outstanding balance, and moves to four stars, becoming an awesome value.

Updated review, over a year later, August, 2012:  Consistent color, with deeper honey hues.  Subtle nose now, with light lemon.  Soft, sleek butterscotch on the palate.  Strong offering.  Held up very well to time in bottle.  Remarkable at this price point.
