Initial background: Original tastings (updated below), March, 2011:  This was an interesting wine tasting concept, sponsored by winetwits and Barone Fini, which paired Valdadige, Italy, Pinot Grigio's at two different price points.  It was done as a live and virtual blind tastings, with the results twittered under the hashtag #tastechallenge.  I don't think my tasting results would have paired up perfectly with Barone Fini's preferences, but these were two very solid wines at their respective price points.

Blinded Wine 1, by way of background. This is  Santa Margherita Valdadige Pinot Grigio, Italy, 2009, finished at 12.5% alcohol.  It is in the three dollar sign category $$$ of Spirit of Wine price levels.

In the glass: Light golden.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows soft subtle aromas of hay and citrus.  From the aroma, seems like this will be soft, layered and sweet.

On the palate: The primary element on the palate is in fact gentle saline, which shows a sleek, light sweetness, and definite mineral elements.  A bright, gliding finish that brings oyster shells along for the ride, quite crying out for seafood.

In summary: Overall, rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale

Updated review, July, 2012:  Consistent color.  The nose now captures some gentle fresh white grape juice as well.   The gliding salinity remains on the palate, with a bold streak of underlying acidity that suggests it could keep even longer if desired.  But, to me, it has lost some of the minerality with age, so I slightly preferred the younger version.

Blinded Wine 2, by way of background. This is  Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio, Italy, 2009, finished at 12.5% alcohol. It is in the three dollar sign category $$$ of Spirit of Wine price levels.

In the glass: Clear with a hint of vanilla.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows soft creamy citrus.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bright, perhaps with apparent sweetness.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact a light citrus touch, with bright clean lemon fruit.  Finish tucks just a hint of sugar in the cheeks.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
