By way of background: Chile is creating quite a crop of recognized cabernet sauvignons.  This is a value-priced offering from Valle Central, Chile, available as part of mixed wine packages from distributor Barclay's Wine.

Initial review, May, 2011: This is Kiyapura Cabernet Sauvignon, Valle Central, Chile, 2010, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Kiyapura is deep mahogany red, opaque in the center of the glass.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows sweet but subtle berries.  From the aroma, seems like this will be smooth on the palate, but perhaps lacking distinction.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft, yielding deep red fruit, with gently surrounding tannins and light acids.  There is just the slightest touch of South African-style "banana", which creates a bit of layer and depth.  Nicely balanced offering, though indeed missing just an extra edge of distinctiveness that would have made it a memorable wine.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. Enough to make it a best value when purchased at discounted case prices.

Following long decant, several days kept cool in partially-filled bottle:    Berry aromas take on a nicer layered element.  Bananas and the balance come through more boldly on the palate, adding a plus for this intensified friendliness.  Watch this with a couple more years in the bottle too.

Updated review, over a year later,  September, 2012:  Color remains deep mahogany.  Soft fresh plums on the nose.  Palate is consistent with the younger, but well-decanted version of Kiyapura Cabernet Sauvignon.  Balanced, layered, soft yet structured - and still aromatic. Remains a best value.
