By way of background:  Saperavi red wine from the Republic of Georgia, is indigenous to the region and hails from the Kakheti region at the far southeastern edge of the republic.  For the 2005 vintage, I was not a big fan.  Both this vintage and the 2005 were part of the value-price Barclays Wine collection.

Initial review, May, 2011: This is Mildiani Saperavi Red Wine, Kakheti, Republic of Georgia, 2007, finished at 13.% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep burgundy with purple highlights.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows deep, full, purple ink.  From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and pliable on the palate.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact smoky and fruity red berries, actually quite sweet in style, without actual residual sugar.  The full red currant and deep pomegranate are offset by the lightly smoky, peppery acids to create a balanced whole, dramatically different from the earlier 2005 vintage.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, just touching a best value status.

Following long decant, several days kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Even softer on the nose, verging on oxidized.   Moving toward oxidized with the characteristic red currant and pepper smoke from earlier.

Updated review, over a full year later, July, 2012:  Still deep burgundy, opaque from about a half inch in from the edge of the glass.  Shy, tangy purple on the nose.  Very consistent palate, holding up well to the extra year of age.
