By way of background, opening thoughts: We've tried a few South Africa red wine blends lately, but this mix of syrah, mourvedre and tannat is a whole different mix.

Original tasting and review : This is Edgebaston Finlayson Family Vineyards The Pepper Pot, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2009, a blend of 65% syrah, 28% mourvedre and 7% tannat, finished at 14.% alcohol.

In the glass: The Pepper Pot is bright bold medium red.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows full pepper, with bold fruit, predominantly black cherry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bright, sweet and deep.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft and peppery, with bold oak and a minor hint of banana.

In summary: Overall a full dark experience, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Seems to have good potential for knitting together with additional time in bottle.

Following long decant, full day at room temperature in partially-filled bottle:   The brightness of blackberry fruit comes forward more boldly in the nose.  Palate holds together with its notes of peppery berry and oak.
