By way of background, opening thoughts: Sonoma, California, and pinot noir just seem to go together.  Let's see how this highly-rated single vineyard Sonoma pinot fares...

Original tasting and review, July, 2011: This is Mas Calvalls Torres Family Vineyards Marimar Estate Dona Margarita Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, California, 2006, unfiltered and finished at 14.2% alcohol.  The "Mas Cavalls" is the higher end pinot noir bottling from Marimar Estate, and less widely available than the "La Masia".  Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits both awarded energetic 94 point scores.

In the glass: Medium red in the glass; no brick, no purple, no opaque - all medium red.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows pulsing bright perfumed tones hinting of flesh, bright berries, petroleum, lipstick and light oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be aromatic and layered.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft spices and easy, pliable red fruit.  Light tannins and little acid zing.  A fresh, light but layered sip on its own.  Finish is lightly lingering but vanishes to the cleanest wisp you can imagine.

In summary: Overall, extremely balanced, layered but delicate mid red experience just touches four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Its lack of extreme distinctive notes comes across more as elegant balance.  Easy to stay with for an evening.

Following long decant, one day kept cool in partially filled bottle:   Aroma remains bold and inviting, though somewhat less bright and missing the multi-faceted elements from a day earlier.  The palate picks up the brightness, remaining soft and light.  I found that the extra day decant detracted from the profile.  Suggest Marimar Mas Cavalls Pinot Noir be enjoyed fresh from the bottle.

Updated review, over a year later,  late July, 2012:  The medium red in the glass has taken on some burgundy tones.  Wow, similar nose with a tiny hint of ok funk.  The red fruit on the palate is soft, easy, yielding and generous.  Has a red berry character that pulls it away from the more generic pinot noir pack.  Still a nice balance and generous, clean finish.   Seems perfectly poised and drinkable now at six years from vintage date.
