By way of background, opening thoughts: Toscana Rosso... ie, red wine blend from the Tuscan region of Italy... let's see what it brings.

Original tasting and review, July, 2011: This is De'Cavalieri Toscana Rosso, Italy, 2010, finished at 12.% alcohol, quite shy by Western standards for red blends.  This is a Tuscan region mix of sangiovese and merlot grapes.

In the glass: Deep red with mahogany hues.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows soft, simple, purple, merlot stylings.  From the aroma, seems like this will be simple, easy and round.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact tangier and more brambly than anticipated. Quite dry, some brightness in the not-quite-ripe-plum fruit.  Settles clean with some residual mouth-scrubbing acid.  May enjoy some additional decant time.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scaleFollowing long decant, five hours in flat-bottomed decanter:  Consistent on the nose and palate following decant.  Decent sip, but stingy with its fruit.  And even longer decant, full day at room temperature in partially filled bottle: Very, very shy nose now.  Wow.  A little, tiny bit of dry red fruit is coming out to play now.  Not quite enough for a plus on top of the two stars, but getting there.  A year or two in bottle may bring out more.

Updated review, over a year later, August, 2012:  Remains deep mahogany.  Simple aromas show a touch of dark oak.  Soft but mineral dry fruit.  Holds to a solid two stars.

Updated review, another year later, October, 2013:  Medium deep red.  Still simple dark fruit, with a touch of funk. Fruit is rounding out a little bit. Garners a plus on the two stars.  This one does want a few years in the bottle.
