By way of background, opening thoughts: Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, California, is certainly known for its cabernet sauvignon and syrah.  Here we will try an old and-somewhat-forgotten standby grape from the region, merlot.

Original tasting and review : This is DeLoach Vineyards Russian River Valley Merlot, Sonoma Country, California, 2006, harvested from the Los Amigos Vineyard, aged 14 months in mixed oak barrels and finished at 1.% alcohol.

In the glass:  Deep magenta.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bold ripe red fruit, somewhat alcoholic, with hint of new washed laundry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet and bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bright red berries on the tip of the tongue, then enfolded with soft and lightly-gritty tannins.

In summary: Overall, clean, bright red, yet still somehow creamy experience warrants three stars with a big plus for its clear character, all on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  This is a good value.
