By way of background, opening thoughts: From Mendocino County in California, we will be sampling a purebred petite sirah.

Original tasting and review, August, 2011: This is Parducci Petite Sirah, Mendocino County, CA, 2006, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Parducci Petite Sirah shows as deep magenta in the glass, opaque from within about a half inch of the edge, showing young purple highlights at the edge, despite being five years from the vintage date.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows funky, deep, helium balloon dark fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full, rich and perhaps bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact dramatically perfumed of violets and lavender, surrounded by a rich but brightly lifted fruit.  Tannins join the acids to bring the aromatic black currants in to a modestly lengthy, and very clean close.  Big, bold, intriguing and aromatic big red - all of this without even sporting a high alcohol level.  Pretty impressive.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its wide range of attractive attributes. I wouldn't quite call them "layers", but Parducci Petite Sirah does provide such a unique range of aromas and flavors in each sip.  Best value at an attractive price point.  Following long decant, four hours in decanter at room temperature:  Bold, slightly candied red fruit on the nose, all traces of helium balloon are evaporated.  The multifaceted elements are knitting together a little bit better with the decanting time, not giving up any of their attitude.  And even longer decant, three more days at cool room temperature in partially filled bottle:  Even softer, slightly muddy, fruit on the nose.  Still integrated on the palate, but somewhat less interesting.  I would stick with shorter decant and same day consumption.

Besides rating this a strong 90 points, Wine Enthusiast made this a "Top 100 Buy", writing, "This is classic Parducci Petite Sirah, a near-perfect example of the variety. Dry and robust, yet smooth, it has complex flavors of wild blackberries, blueberries, molasses, dark chocolate, bacon and peppery spices. With beautiful balance, it’s a great value."

Updated review, over a year later,  August, 2012:  Consistent deep magenta color, still opaque in the center.  Soft, deep fruit on the nose.  Black currants and deep tannins, with fruited aromatics.
